Catskill Mountain Layers

Catskill Mountain Layers Collection

I love to work on a ledge at a lofty viewpoint marveling in the nuances of light at either end of the day. The landscape is rendered into basic lines and simple colors that trace each bump and dip in the landscape. Add a colorful sky, drama laden clouds, a burst of sunlight and you have a recipe for majesty that will fuel your mind for days to come. I especially love to use a longer lens on such views to compress and exaggerate the different layers in the landscape stretching out in front of me.

I often find hiking in the Catskills frustrating, the trees generally obscure the view as you move along or up a ridge - then blam, there’s a small ledge, there’s a blowdown, there’s a fire tower and the majesty of the whole landscape opens up in it’s awe inspiring beauty. Here’s a few moments that I’ve lucky enough to photography from such breaks in the trees.
